William Buchanan BSc(Eng), MBA, CEng, MIChemE
William is a tutor with a difference. Although he comes from a commercial rather than a teaching background, he brings a passion for mathematics and science education which he believes is critical to the success of the next generation of scientists, engineers and computing specialists.
Having obtained a Chemical Engineering degree at University College, London, he spent the past 30 years in both industry and the financial sector where he held a wide range of roles ranging from Process Engineer at a major oil company to Head of Oil Trading at a large European bank. Each role required a substantial amount of numerical analysis and intellectual rigor.
Over his career, William has trained and mentored many junior staff members. His great patience together with his ability to explain the most abstract concepts in terms that a junior can understand make him an outstanding coach.
William has always had a love of Maths and Physics and has studied these subjects at a recreational level since leaving university. While taking a sabbatical from work in 2011, he tutored several students of GCSE and A level standard with considerable success.
Encouraged by these results, in 2012 he created Reigate Tutors in order to devote all of his time to his passion, namely encouraging young people to embrace and enjoy Maths and Physics. Greater confidence in these subjects should not only give students a happier time at school but will also open doors to the full range of degree subjects and career paths that will follow.
